Understanding the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC)
Empowering Learners Through Skills, Values, and Real-Life Application
What is CBC?
The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is a learner-centered approach to education that focuses on what learners can do, not just what they know. Unlike traditional methods that emphasize memorization and exams, CBC encourages students to apply knowledge, develop practical skills, and live out values in their daily lives.
In Uganda, CBC is being adopted in schools to equip learners with 21st-century competencies such as critical thinking, communication, creativity, digital literacy, and responsible citizenship.
Why is CBC Important?
The world is changing rapidly. Employers, communities, and families need people who can:
- Solve real-world problems
- Work well with others
- Adapt to change
- Make ethical decisions
- Communicate effectively
- Care for the environment
CBC prepares learners to face these challenges with confidence by allowing them to learn by doing and to reflect on how their actions affect others.
What Makes CBC Unique?
- Learner-Centered: Every child learns differently. CBC gives learners a chance to explore, experiment, and take ownership of their learning.
- Project-Based: Learners work on practical projects that connect to real-life issues, making learning meaningful and fun.
- Value-Driven: At Namanve High School, we integrate Christian values like honesty, love, responsibility, and respect in every project.
- Skills-Focused: Learners are assessed not just on knowledge, but also on skills and attitudes — how they work, think, and behave.
